Creating a Brand Hashtag

Creating a brand is hard enough and then all of the creative pieces that go along with it - logo etc.  Something a lot of small brands miss is creating a unique brand hashtag to use on social media.

A brand hashtag has valuable points in that it can grow with you and your brand from the beginning and also help keep track of your brand’s reach and engagement.

To create a brand hashtag here are a few notes:

If the name of your company is something common like Hot Dog Pet Store and you specialize in puppy sales; you want to be careful not to choose something that gets lost like #hotdog or #puppies which has millions of hits.

You also don’t want it to be too long #hotdogpuppypetstore

You want to be creative like #hotdogbarks

Maybe add an identifier like a location: #hotdogbarkPA #hotdogbarkNC

Consider a flagship product, item, service that becomes part of your brand identity if the name really doesn’t stand out enough:

#pugglessnuggle #rileythehotdog #hotdogmilo #wholovesdaisy #oscarthemascot

As with most aspects of creativity, you have to brainstorm it.  Sit down with pen and paper, gather your team or support system, and throw out all of the varieties you can think of.  Once you have a solid list, research them, try them out and see how it feels.

Whatever you create, stick to it! Use it on your marketing materials in addition to your social media posts.  It is to become a part of your identity so don’t be afraid to use it freely.
